Committee Meeting
The winter break may have been quiet, but the Spring 2015 Committees were working hard in preparation for the new semester. The Spring 2015 Committees met on Sunday, January 11 to review new and exciting changes for the semester. Allen Au brought the meeting to attention as he recapped the previous semester and introduced some of the great ideas for the semester.
Allen Au started an open discussion on an important issue: helping new members socialize with older members and alumni. After discussing the issue, the new mentor system was introduced by Nancy Garcia. Designed to help new members connect with others, the Mentor System pairs a more senior BAP&AS member with new comers. To qualify as a mentor, senior members must hold an internship or full-time offer (or completed an internship). The goal of the program is to give new members a personal resource who can help them throughout the entire semester, not just at Big Buddy Little Buddy. With the new program, we hope that new members find it easier to socialize with the entire BAP&AS and alumni community.
Community Service was another program that had exciting news. With the projector stating “Quality vs Quantity”, Yessica Gaytan took the stage in announcing our intent to create more meaningful community service. With an organization of our size, we have the potential to create a significant impact on our community. Inspired by KPMG’s International Day of Literacy, a volunteer program that the Fall 2014 Officer Board had the opportunity to participate in, one of the proposed options is to allow BAP&AS members to visit local schools to read to students and promote the accounting professional. Another idea was to invite high school or community college students to a BAP&AS meeting to promote our organization, all while helping students find their academic direction. Make sure to read further editions of the Ledger to be informed of any changes in our community service.
After the new changes were announced, the committees broke off into groups to meet and discuss their roles for the semester. Names, phone numbers, and emails were exchanged as the committees formed. With an assembly of such capable committee members, there are sure to be great positive advances for the organization this semester.
